Locally provided packages

Hello there.. In gentoo (which I use) I can have a package.provided file that I can specify any package. Portage read's it and assumes those packages are installed..

Is there a way to do this with debian (need it for my vps)?

Thank you,
iotc247 - Alex

Check out the apt howto. It should tell you everything you need to know.
