List files in a package before installing?

Hi,
I've been looking around in the man page of apt-cache and the web, but I can't see if it's possible to list the contents of a package without actually downloading, installing it and then using dpkg on it.

Is there a way to get the entire contents listing of what a package would give you without installing it? What files end up on your system if you decide to install it?

Not sure what you mean. But you can use apt-cache show package to see what dependencies are going to be installed.

Google turned up apt-file, but I haven't tried it out yet... Looks like apt-file list package might be what you're looking for...

thanks guys, appreciate the help, yes of course, the apt-file was what I was looking for... somebody told me about this before and I just forgot after not having used it for ages...

THe web page is also very helpful for searching packages....
