Linksys WLAN card not recognised on 2.6.8 kernel
 

Hi all

Last year I've got myself a second hand Amillo Pro laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens) and installed Debian Sarge on it. Worked straight out of the box :) It didn't have a wireless card, but after a short period I took care of that by buying a Linksys WPC 54G WLAN card (version 3, PCMCIA). Plugged it in, booted the laptop and... it failed. Logicly, offcourse, as I hadn't installed any drivers. To cut a long story short: with the help of a Dutch forum I got the Win-drivers to install with ndiswrapper. Unfortunately, it still fails, even with the proper drivers installed as per the How-to I used. It turned out that my vanilla 2.6.8-2-386 kernel doesn't recognise the card. Actually, it does to a very limited extend as it recognises it has a Broadcom chipset and the subsystem is Linksys.

I tried to install the then current 2.6.14 kernel, got a bzImage in the right place but after the reboot it complained about a missing initrd file. Not much of a success thus... Basicly, I'm stuck now. :scratch: I even messed around with the sources.list, adding Sid-repo's for the 2.6.15 kernel. I was afraid before, and my fear came true, that it would leave me with a broken system and indeed it did. That costed me a 4 hour midnight re-install (including the kernelsources). If you like to see for yourself I have the output of cardctl, lspci and lshw as textfiles available, just need to upload them to my webspace.
