Question library version??

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hi, Penguins.

I am confused. I have etch penguin running.

Story is:

A program needs libtiff.so.3, my penguin has libtiff.so.4.

So that I looked for Debian site for libtiff.so.3 and found libtiff3g package at old stable. Then I downloaded source code and compiled (tiff-v3.5.5). -> libtiff.a popped out

Not knowing what to do next, I downloaded current source code from www.libtiff.org, (tiff_3.8.2)-> compiled-> libtiff.so.3 popped out -> installed-> and things look good. (tiff_3.8.2) is the same package as etch. (why not libtiff.so.4 ????)

I do not have much experience at conventional and elf libraries, (and numbers after .so)

What defines library type and numbers?

Happy Penguins!!

Since libtiff.so.4 is more recent than libtiff.so.3, you could have symlinked libtiff.so.3 to libtiff.so.4. That would have solved your problem without downgrading your current libtiff package.
