http://www.linuxprinting.org is the first place to check for supported printers. the z45 is not listed. there is a reference to it from a few years back:

The z45 is not supported with free software. Please contact Lexmark
technical support, and request free software support.

I have a Z43 which, despite the warnings of varying compatibility in linux, I did have it successfully working with debian flavors and SUSE for the two years I have been running linux. Until my latest dist upgrade when the gimp print package became gutenprint. The foomatic/ijs drivers are no longer working on it and there is just one other driver that gives me the same result you are getting, about an inch through and then it quits. After messing about for a week or two trying drivers I found around the net and compiled I gave up and got a little HP for the main machine and put the lexmark on a secondary machine that I have frozen the older gimp print and foomatic packages on.

Hoping if you have success you will post your method. THe lexmark maybe a bit of a cheapie but refilling the cartridges were pretty easy and it did print nicely. Hate to junk it but I will eventually need to upgrade the second machines print packages.
