Knoppix Rocks!

After having a few serious problems with debian Woody installs on a couple computers I tried KNOPPIX, and it loads right the first time. I'm really digging it. Now, since I know everything CAN work with Linux on my PC, can I use knoppix to install Linux on my PC, an installation that will work the first time. What's the differenece between Woody installations and running knoppix off a cd? I'll probably be back with more general questions later after I play some more. Thanks in advanced.

I love Linux! If only I could get it to install on my hard drive right AND work teh first time!

Is knoppix like a version or sarge or sid? Maybe I would have better luck installing them? I had similar problems as MANY people have with X crashing on debian installs, but everything else was installed and configured right.

Knoppix is a mixture of Sarge and Sid

knoppix 2
then
knx-hdinstall

I have been using knoppix installed on my harddrive for 6 months now. Technically it is no longer knoppix, but debian.

I have KDE 3.2, Linux Kernel 2.6.1-mm2, w/lm_sensors working.

I was able to swap totally different motherboards with no problem it took 10 minutes to modify the setup for the new motherboard.

Debian is awsome. It made it possible for Knoppix.

knoppix hd install lilo?

OK if I do that, will it partition the hard disk, and then still let me easily boot to windows? I know debian used lilo, but that's a pain in the butt if anything goes wrong. I've been down that route once today!

Also do I enter that command at the boot prompt?

Do you happen to know of any documents or howtos relating to installing knoppix? I would have liked a good old regular woody debian install, but have yet to get one to work first time through like knoppix.

Thanks,
Garrett

Yeah, Knoppix really opened some doors, not only to Debian GNU/Linux software, but to easy to install Live CDs. Both Morphix and Mepis do the same thing for installing a Knoppix-based Debian system to a hard drive. It can't get much easier.

I tried typing in the command mentioned this worked and installed to my hard drive. One major problem though - Running from the cd knoppix detected my usb modem and I was able to use my broadband without any problems. Running from the hard drive it could not detect the modem. Someone recommended changing a file which enabled my usb but still could not configure broadband. I then booted up the cd opened a terminal window and typed in the following command;

sudo knoppix-installer

and followed the instructions. All installed okay including my broadband. Would recommend this way rather than using 'knx-hdinstall'.

Good Luck,

Mark.

Great site link: http://jetblackz.cjb.net/ !

That's a keeper.

On the install commands, the site above mentions using knoppix-installer instead of knx-hdinstall.

I'm looking forward to this tinkering session. I'll be installing to a laptop.
