don,t know if i,m even in the right place but here goes. i have installed 3.7 on hard drive. i have no other O/S. if i download anything, make changes to appearance, or config all is lost on startup. i use knoppix fromhd/dev/hda1 at startup. am having to use cdrom to boot from which is a pain as after i cannot access cd.it,s as setup is read only. am a complete idiot and have no ideas on how make this work like my old 98 did. don,t want to go back to windows under any circumstances.
This is not an answer, more a suggestion, but if you really want to keep using Linux you really should install a 'real' distro, such as Ubuntu (they say it's easy) or the real thing, Debian itself.
Knoppix is not intended to be used other than as a read-only system Live cd. It's still usefull as a system rescue disk, so do keep it.

I disagree. I am running a hard drive install of Knoppix 3.7 and love it. It is fast, friendly, and easy to install software to. How did you install it? I booted the live cd, used the konsole command line window and typed "sudo knoppix-installer" and it went from there. I haven't been successful with any other install method.

To clarify, I meant unsuccessful with copying to hard drive and running from there etc. I am running Debian Sarge on one of my other machines at the moment and there isn't a lot of difference between it and the hard drive install of Knoppix. They both are great OS's. I like Deb systems better than any other that I have had so far. FC3 & 4, Slackware, Mandrake, Suse, all good, I just like Deb based better. They seem to be a lot faster and more stable with the newbie friendly frills also available. Personal opinion.
