Keyboard Response poor

I have installed Debian Etch on an old Sony Vaio (PCG FX804) and the keyboard response is quite poor (e.g. need to hit keys twice often to enter a character). Are there any flash X configuration tools that let you check things out. I'm running a KDE desktop. It's not the keyboard since it's fine under windows and SuSE.

It's as though you have to hold the key down for at least half a second before the key is accepted as being pressed.
