Kernel Panic on mirroring HDD

Hi
Iam trying to mirror my HDD on Debian Sarge 2.4 ..Ive used G4L startup disks..and knoppix startup with dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb to mirror my hdd from hda to hdb "hda is 40 GB and hdb is 40GB"..because hda is giving out strange voices so I wana be prepared when it fails...the backup process itself works quite well..but when it finishes I unplug hda and try to boot from hdb ..it starts normally grub loads and I boot the system but after a few moments I get the following error:

pivot_root: No Such file or directory
/sbin/init: 432: cannot open
dev/console: No such file Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

Note: I have to point out that i did not partition hdb , since Iam under the impression that dd writes the hdd bit by bit..thus it writes the partition table amongst others...

Check if the hdb is still slave (so hdb). Linux tries to boot hda - but no primary-master, so oops.
