kernel panic - no cpio magic


i am trying to install debian linux kernel with initramfs support enabled.
However i am getting the error mentioned below:

Kernel panic - not syncing: no cpio magic
if any one can help me out with this it'll be of great help

Did you install the build-essential package? If not, do so
