Kernel panic!


hello!

I'm new at this forum and i havent used Linux much. any how, I hope I can find some answers to my questions here

I have tried to install debian Linux to my computer but when i try to bot it with the new system it all works fine untill:

Journaled block Devicedriver Loaded
Pivot_root: nosuch file or directory
/sbin/init: 426: cannot open devconsole: Nosuch file
Kernel Panic: Attempted to kill init!

hopefully some one has som experiance of these things...

the computer I am trying to run linux on is a:
P4 2,4 (800fsb)
512 MB ram
asus p4p800 motherboard
gforce4 graphics

Hmm, are you trying to install sarge or another version of Debian? I'm not sure what the problem is, but this might help. Insert your Debian boot/install CD and restart your PC. When the prompt comes up type "linux26" and hit enter to continue. This will install the 2.6 kernel as opposed to the 2.4 kernel that sarge installs by default (I'm assuming you use sarge of course). Then let it install and see if you get the same error. I hope that helps, but I'm a newbie myself so I don't know if it will.

did you compile the kernel yourself?

have you tried selecting the (recovery mode) kernel?

I am having the same problem. Seems to be a problem with SATA drivers according to this bug report:
