Kernel 2.6.18 depends on new version of coreutils

Hi,

I have been using Debian Sarge(Stable) version with Kernel 2.6.17 from Debian Repo. I decided to upgrade to Debian Kernel 2.6.18 and when I tried to install the kernel deb package (by dpkg -i <kernel>), I got an error message saying:

Code:
linux-image-2.6.18 depends on coreutils (>=5.96); however Version of coreutils on system is 5.2.1-2
How do I get around this issue? Will I have to upgrade to etch? How about backports?

it's pretty clear you need to upgrade coreutils

Thanks for the reply. But I am sure there are other ways to get around it.....Debian is quite flexible as far as I know.

Unstable has 5.97 in the repositories, so you can get it from there. You can try:
Code:
apt-get -t unstable install coreutils
It might throw a fit over upgrading just coreutils, it has a bit of a list of dependencies, but it might be ok. You can also try -t testing instead of -t unstable, I don't know what version of coreutils is in testing at the moment.

Peace,
JimBass
