I just installed the 2.6.16-2-686-smp kernel from sid but im unable to find the proper nvidia driver for this kernel. Same goes for 2.6.16-1 also. Only the default kernel 2.6.15-1 has support from nvidia-glx-legacy driver 1.0.7174-2 module. Though i can work with the 'nv' driver it lacks speed of the nvidia driver. I can't stick with the old kernel coz it doesn't support 'tvtime'(no input source except 'default'). With the new kernel tvtime works absolutely fine.

To be honest you are sort of stuck at this time. nvidia has been promising updated legacy drivers that would work with the newer kernels but that was 7 months ago I don't really think it is going to happen now.
Things like driver issues are one of the reasons I use Kanotix. To install the drivers for my GeForce 5500 card all I had to do was run install-nvidia-debian.sh and everything installed and rebooted automagically.
Of course I don't have one of the newer top of the line cards.
Bobnutfield, it all depends on your nvidia chipset, I am assuming since he is using legacy drivers it is a older card. the new nvidia drivers for the newer cards work fine with the new kernel. It is the legacy drivers that have the issue building against a new kernel. And since the glx part from the new drivers doesn't work with older cards it leaves you stuck.
betrayed...thank you for that. I was not aware of that. However, I hardly think of my chipset as new (FX5500 256mb). The card was purchased from a computer fair and I believe this chipset is about 4 years old. I previously used an FX5700 LE (probably the same chipset) and also used the stock nVidia drivers successfully in four other distros (Fedora, Slackware, Ubuntu, Suse). Mepis (which of course is Debian based) also uses the same stock driver.
Donīt misunderstand, I am certainly not arguing. I defer to you better-than-mine-knowledge. I simply offered the information as a suggestion becuase I tried the Debian method and it didnīt work. The stock nVidia installer did.
i am just about to install the nvidia drivers, i just had to reinstall as i trashed my last etch installation...
just curious... how can i kill x and switch to the console to install the driver? as i have tried running "init 3" as root in a terminal and it doesn't do anything...

help me please!
Normal by default under debian, default level=init 2 and init 2 is the same as init 3, so that you can configure it for yourself.

While it isn't new, the NV36 is hardly a "legacy" chipset.
I have the exact same card. With versions of the NVidia driver newer than 1.0-7676, I have problems with resizing & rescaling in different resolutions. Other than that it works perfectly. You have to tell the NVidia installer that you want it to compile a module for you.
Old or not(5700FX) i dont know all i found was an nvidia driver that supported my 2.6.15-1 kernel and installed it to say the least. Now the nvidia installer isnt installing. First it says no module found for my kernel(2.6.16-2), then tries for that ftp site on nvidia, then fails, then wants to build with my kernel sources, fails again, unable to find the sources. Now what?
I got the latest(i suppose) NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run file.
