Thanks for all the replies,

I wasnt sure what the diffrence is on the 686 and i386, Its a dule core processor in the machine, however im running debian on virtual box if it makes any diffrence, Im just trying to update the kernel because debian is throwing loads of kernel errors and it was suggested that a kernal update will help

I dont mind using the 32 kernel either i jsut want sure if the 686 was the correct one!

686 should be just right for a virtual machine.

For a while i had problems with the backports/squeeze/sid-kernel (all three are 32) in virtualbox.
I got rid of the problem by installing the liquorix one.
Two things:
a) like craigevil said you would need to run squeeze/testing to use the liqourix-kernel.
b) not everyone had the problem i mentioned. And i don't know if it still exists.

If it was me i would do a VirtualBox-screenshot of the OS the way it is and do the upgrade.
(to upgrade you need a newer kernel anyway, say the backports one, so you might instll that one, check if all is cool. If not do the screenshot by VirtualBox and go for an upgrade).

This way or the other: good luck.
