So I rebooted this morning to see if all the upgrades would make a difference. They most certainly did. The KDE desktop is unusable. Windows do not have any controls in the control (docking, full-screen, reducing and closing). There is no working K-menu in the lower-left corner. Fortunately, I have a couple of fall-back desktops. I am now using a gnome minimalist desktop which is at least functional. When will this end.
jdk
I had that problem too. I uninstalled and reinstalled something that made it work though.
Thanks Rep.
I'm sorry for being thick but what exactly did you install? The only thing I see on the screenshot is that your widget style is Breeze. Is that what you mean? I see there are packages called kde-style-breeze and kwin-style-breeze. Is that what you installed to fix kde?
jdk
Have you downgraded kde-window-manager to version 4:4.11.13-2? You can get it from Stable.
Yes, I just did that (against my better judgement) and as I feared, I have fallen into dependency hell.
1. Removed kde-window-manager
Code:
:~$ sudo apt-get remove kde-window-manager
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
dlint libnss-lwres lwresd mailagent nfs-kernel-server postgresql sa-exim samba-doc smartmontools
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
The following extra packages will be installed:
plasma-netbook task-british-desktop task-british-kde-desktop task-desktop task-english
task-print-server task-ssh-server task-web-server tasksel tasksel-data
The following packages will be REMOVED:
kde-plasma-desktop kde-standard kde-window-manager kde-workspace task-database-server
task-dns-server task-file-server task-kde-desktop task-mail-server
The following NEW packages will be installed:
plasma-netbook
The following packages will be upgraded:
task-british-desktop task-british-kde-desktop task-desktop task-english task-print-server
task-ssh-server task-web-server tasksel tasksel-data
9 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 9 to remove and 27 not upgraded.
Need to get 352 kB of archives.
2. I tried to install the older version of kde-window-manager
Code:
tmp$ sudo dpkg -i kde-window-manager_4.11.13-2_amd64.deb
Selecting previously unselected package kde-window-manager.
(Reading database ... 361301 files and directories currently installed.)

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of kde-window-manager:

3. Tried to fix the dependency problems, one by one starting with libkdecorations4abi2
Code:
/tmp$ sudo apt-get install libkdecorations4abi2
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kde-window-manager : Depends: libkwineffects1abi5 (= 4:4.11.13-2) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libkwinglesutils1 (= 4:4.11.13-2) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libkwinglutils1abi2 (= 4:4.11.13-2) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libxcb-xtest0 but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
4. Back to square 1
Code:
tmp$ sudo apt-get -f install
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Correcting dependencies... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
kde-window-manager

Setting up kde-window-manager (4:5.3.2-2) ...
Thanks to all for your patience. I decided to grit my teeth and try again.
1. I removed the faulty version of kde-windows-manager.
2. I installed the 5 packages that were the missing dependencies:
a. libkdecorations4abi2
b. libkwineffects1abi5
c. libkwinglesutils1
d. libkwinglutils1abi2
e. libxcb-xtest0
and apt-get installed the older version of kde-windows-manager.
All is not well, however.
a. The Amarok database is still broken.
b. My plasma-wifi-management widget is still missing.
But I'm grateful for your advice and at least I have a usable KDE desktop which is much better than the Gnome Metacity that I had been using during the blackout.
jdk
I do like the Breeze theme more than Oxygen, and there is a dark version that looks good too. So far, KDE 5 feels a little more responsive and effects are smoother than KDE 4 was. This is on my laptop with the i915 driver.
When I run the new KDE, the TTYs have graphics glitches. Anyone else seeing this?
