KDE panels become huge after applying anti-aliasing.

I have had no luck trying to figure out what the problem is with KDE making the panels really big. I did post in another forum, but they have been unable to help me. Hopefully someone here can give insight to the problem:

"All i did was turn on anti-aliasing support in kcontrol, and now for some reason all the pop up panels are huge. Here is a pic:

http://server5.uploadit.org/files2/191203-asuser.png

If i start kcontrol as root, the panels are normal size:

http://server5.uploadit.org/files2/191203-asroot.png

What gives? The panels barely even fit on the screen. I tried turning off anti-aliasing, but the panel stays the same humungous size.

Using Debian Sid, 2.6.0 stable, KDE 3.1.4. Resolution is set at 1024x768x24"

I even submitted it as a bug a while ago:

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70953

It might be a debian specific issue, so thats why i am posting here. This is probably my last desperate attempt at solving this.

Thanks.

this may or may not be helpful or relevant:

I had a similar problem with open office
it turned out to be because I had put the truetype fonts into the wrong folder - the type 1 folder or vice versa. once I put them in the right folder the panels went back to normal size. v.frustrating

The ttf fonts were installed in my machine with 'apt-get install msttcorefonts'. And they are located here:

# dpkg -L msttcorefonts
/.
/etc
/etc/X11
/etc/X11/fonts
/etc/X11/fonts/TrueType
/etc/defoma
/etc/defoma/hints
/etc/defoma/hints/msttcorefonts.hints
/var
/var/lib
/var/lib/msttcorefonts
/usr
/usr/sbin
/usr/sbin/update-ms-fonts
/usr/X11R6
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/msttcorefonts
/usr/share/doc/msttcorefonts/copyright
/usr/share/doc/msttcorefonts/changelog.gz
/usr/share/man
/usr/share/man/man8
/usr/share/man/man8/update-ms-fonts.8.gz
/usr/share/fonts
/usr/share/fonts/truetype

It seems like the correct path, or is kde looking somewhere else? I mean i have tried almost everything: changing font size, style, window decorations, etc. Its just soo annoying with having panels pop up the size of your desktop. Funny thing is that this always happens, even if i do a complete fresh install of Debian Sid and kde. Just turn on anti-aliasing, and boom, you get butt ugly huge panels which never go away.

sorry, I use suse 9.0 in a rather unscientific and illogical way, so can't understand the above output!!

I just copied all the fonts from my xp machine and put them on a cd which I copied to the true type fonts folder and to the type 1 folder. when it all went strange I then took them out of the type 1 folder and it seemed to work ok.

did it work ok before you installed the fonts?

of course it could be nothing to do with that, I never had the issue with the kde panels, just the openoffice ones.

hopefully someone clever will see this thread and give a better answer!

I have the same problem. I think everybody will experience the same problem after using anti-aliasing fonts.
I generally reduce the font size of "Desktop" and "Menu" to 10 and the fonts looks better.

thanks for verifying. But the problem is the size of the panels, not fonts. They are so huge afterwards. Very ugly looking. And you can't go back to a normal size once you have applied anti-aliasing.
