KDE failing to load after x-windows prompt

I have completed the installation of KDE with no indication that any errors occured, apart from the suggestion that i should remove the repeated urls in the source.list file.

So, logging in to (either of) my user account(s), I enter my credentials at the x-windows prompt, and I see the KDE load screen. However, once the initiation reaches the third step(/icon), the 'Initializing Peripherals' step, it blacks out, closes the session, and returns to the x-windows prompt.

the console reads:
Code:

Jan  5 05:10:28 debian PAM_unix[2582]: (xdm) session closed for user (my username)
Jan  5 05:10:30 debian modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-13

this isn't exactly what one might call cryptic, but I personally don't have a clue what it's asking for/what I need to do for KDE to load properly. could someone please help?

Sounds like corrupted config files. You might fix it by removing ~/.kde/share/config/

I had the same problem today. I went into the /etc/X11 xf66config-4 file and added "Off" after the DPMS option. THis solved my login problem.
Hope this helps.

Hmm, I don't use xdm, but can't you hit ctrl+alt+f1 until you get to the console -- then suspend with ctrl+z, become root, telinit 4, then get back into X and kill it nicely if you want.

Then from runlevel 4, become the user you want to be and use startx.

but is there any way of accessing the command line without logging in? or disabling KDE momentarily without the use of the command line? as i said i'm unable to log in, how were you able to?

edit: oh, thank you!

excuse my stupidity, but how does one return to X-windows once on the command line?

snacky 02-01-2004 09:45 PM

startx

You will drop back to the console if X dies, which frankly might be convenient in your case, while you track down the problem.

awesome, okay so here's what i've got:

after it prints out the line regarding the mouse, it says:
Code:

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 4. Server aborting

(a message about reporting bugs to debian project)

xinit:  connection to x server lost.

does that help at all?

No.

Your most recent logfile will be in /var/log/XFree86.0.log
