kde apps kill the sound

I use debian Sarge, on a Pentium II 350 Mhz machine, with the default (gnome) setting. I set up the alsa-modules-2.4.27-2-386, which corresponds with the kernel image I have. I've run alsaconf, and sound works fine. I also, in the gnome-control-centre, set the gnome sound system to load on boot. So, there is sound for both gnome games, and for other games. But, when I run a kde program, like kbattleship, or guarddog, I usually get a message that the sound server cannot be started, and it's returning to the null output device orginal, or something like that. Then, there's no sound except for the gnome applications (meaning, the internet has no sound, Quake2 has no sound, defendguin has no sound....) Is there a way to fix this?
