KDE applet for apt-get update/upgrade

Hi,

I am looking for a KDE tool that indicates if there are package updates available for my system. SuSE uses a kde applet called "susewatcher" which I find quite helpful.

Is there something similar for Debian and apt-get? It should run "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" at certain intervals and indicate that there are new updates.

I know I can automate the process using a shell script and cron, but I don't want to get some annoying popups or emails. A tiny kde applet that just changes its color would be ideal.

No such applet that I am aware of, however be aware that such an applet would be rather server-unfriendly as it would have to hit the servers pretty often to download the lists.

Surely once a day would do the trick.

There is a package called cron-apt, but it will use the mail system to notify you. One email a day shouldn't be a problem, should it?

Surprise, Surprise!

This morning, in Synaptic's "New in Repository" I found:

Update-notifier.

Quote:

Update Notifier will check for the availability of new packages for
your Debian system on a daily basis. When it detects new versions of
the packages installed on the system are available, it will add an
icon on the desktop notification area.

It will work with any Desktop system that implements the FreeDesktop
notification area specification, like GNOME, KDE and XFCE.
Note that this is in the Unstable section.

I wonder if that's what Ubuntu uses? Ubuntu has a notifier that pops up when new updates are available. It comes already setup when you install the distro.
