KDE 3.4 desktop, made easy ;)

How?

Knoppix 3.9 is out... sporting a snazy KDE 3.4 desktop, 2.6.11 kernel, OO.o 2 beta, and a host of other goodies... a simple 'debian' style hard drive installation will get ya set up.... just thought i'd share...

Well I just typed in emerge sync && emerge -uv world and it installed it for me. Oh, I also updated my config files but I don't think they were related to KDE. That was pretty easy too. It also kept KDE 3.3 just in case.

Oh, guess what Bill Gates, no reboot. A whole new GUI and still have this:

Code:
root@smoker / # uptime
 02:47:02 up 236 days, 19:23, 4 users, load average: 1.79, 1.67, 1.38
root@smoker / #
I run folding so it stays busy.

I couldn't pass it up. It is so easy in Gentoo. I just wish the install were easier for people. That install can be tough.

For Sarge users

Sarge users could safely install kde 3.4.1 from:

deb http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde-3.4.1/ ./

But when you want to use the project utopia stuff, you should install this package manually:

http://packages.debian.org/unstable/libs/dbus-qt-1

This packages are actually targetted at unstable, so if they are updated in the coming weeks they might be incompatible with sarge, because of the c++ transition and other transitions.

And replace the devices:/ sidebar link in konqueror with media:/

X.org is apt-gettable from:

deb http://people.debian.org/~nobse/xorg-x11/ sarge main

You need to make sure all X related libs are upgraded too.

It's not that hard :P Only when you're going to do it in non-standard ways. It's just following the guide. Shame that it seems a bit impossible to do it with wireless connection. I tried installing it next to debian. Internet worked ok till suddenly emerge would just stop. And nobody on the gentoo forums knew how to do it. Shame cause I want a stage1 install or no gentoo

Do a stage three install then do a emerge -ev world. I was told it is basically the same thing. It did take me a couple tries to get it right but I made it. It is harder to install than Mandrake though. I say that and I can't get Mandrake 9.1 or 9.2 to install on the old 800MHz rig. That sucks. I'll install Gentoo on it too I guess.

Kubuntu offers the same KDE and it is probably a cleaner hard disk install than Knoppix. You can probably also just add Kubuntu sources and install the latest KDE using apt (without rebooting ), although I haven't tried it. I have found in KDE 3.4.0 that it was not stable, maybe the newer version is better. Openoffice 2.0 beta also has a lot to be desired. It could not print properly, did not recognize all of my fonts for some reason, and Impress crashes any time you try a slide sjow of a powerpoint file. Openoffice 2.0 does have greatly improved PDF export, that is the only thing I use it for. I am waiting for the final version (probably I will wait for the Debian-ized final version).

I like the Kanotix install rather than Knoppix. It seems more stable. I have ran it since November 2004 with no problems.

OO 2.0Beta can be installed by adding to your sources.list
#OpenOffice.org 2.0beta
deb http://debian.tu-bs.de/project/kanotix/ooo-kanotix/ ./
It runs fine. I have only had a couple problems with it.
