Java plugin - odd behaviour

I've recently upgraded a PC on Squeeze to Wheezy, and have come across a couple of problems. The main one is the Java plugin - it works in some browsers, and not in others. I've downloaded the latest version from Sun, and updated symlinks but results are still variable. Results from the Java test page: -

Chrome - no result, page simply stays with Detecting Java on your computer.
Epiphany - No working Java was detected on your system.
Galeon - You have the recommended Java installed (Version 7 Update 10).
Firefox - You have the recommended Java installed (Version 7 Update 10).
Konqueror - No working Java was detected on your system.
Opera - You have the recommended Java installed (Version 7 Update 10).
Iceweasel - You have the recommended Java installed (Version 7 Update 10).

All browsers are the latest versions. I've extracted the Sun package to /opt in its own directory, and created symlinks to: -
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins
/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins
/opt/google/chrome/plugins

As always, thanks in advance for any help with this.
