I'm up and running with Debian (Woody) and KDE. I want to start using my linux box for my Java class. I am looking for an environment similar to JBuilder or JCreator to work with.
I've looked all over and can't seem to find a good HOWTO to install Java on Debian. The best I can find is the Debian pages:
I'm not online, so I have do download the packages then move them to my linux box to install them. This looks like the best site I can find to download Blackdown:
Should I install Blackdown or just go to the Sun Java for Linux site? Does Blackdown have a developer like JBuilder or JCreator? Either way, there isn't a good Newbie HOWTO that I can find for this. Any help getting going is appreciated.
I don't know how to install Java on Debian, I use Gentoo. But I can help you with some other stuff. First off all, it doesn't matter which JDK you use (IBM, Sun, Blackdown) for the IDE. An IDE works with every JDK. There a number of IDE's for Linux: JBuilder 9 Personal (Free to download from the Borland site), Eclipse (Great IDE) and Netbeans. Which one is the best is a personal favour, I use Eclipse because it's plugin architecture ( a lot of plugins exist for it, search Google). I hope this helped a bit.
i have just done this with Blackdown. The debs route would be the easiest. Since you would not do a direct apt-get install establish the package you want and the dependencies and download them all (=both if I remember). Put the packages in /var/cache/apt/archives and then do apt-get install.
Great help from both! Thanks a ton! I'll see where I can go from there.
If I install an IDE, do I have to also install the JDK separate? In which order if so?
Does puting any files I download into the dir you listed and apt-getting work as a general rule, or only with Blackdown? I assume I can only do it with debs...
