is my modem winmodem?

I'm pretty new. I'm working on a debian 3.1 sarge installation. I have lots of problems. My modem is an internal modem, a "Conexant Smart HsFi v92 56k speakerphone pci modem" on COM 3. I looked online, but the modem's site doesn't say anything about it being a winmodem. I'm under the impression if it's a winmodem I have no chance of getting it to work. I typed

"echo atdt3333333 > /dev/ttyS2".

I should hear dialing, but I don't. There's no error or anything. I went ahead and edited some files... /etc/chatscripts/provider and /etc/ppp/peers/provider and created a file /etc/resolv.conf (which I wasn't sure about...) and tried "pon" and "poff". No help there. I think I'm a member of the right group. I think the card is not being recognised. Any help would be apreciated!!

Most conexant modems are winmodems. Try this site. I got mine working with these drivers, but it was crippled to something like 14kbps. To get full speed would cost like $20 US, so I took my $20 and bought an external serial modem that works like a champ...

I'll try the site. I cannot find a package called ltmodem. I'm working from disks, of course.

Well, I went to the site. I could not get their solution to work. I first used their windows tool, called 'ListMdm.exe' and found that my 'subvendor' name is 'unknown'. I was directed to download the default package, called "hsfmodem_7.47.00.03full_i386.deb.zip". I unzipped the file and executed the command "dpkg -i hsfmodem_7.47.00.03full_i386.deb". I was immediately told I needed the package "kernel-headers-2.4.27-2-386". I downloaded them with synaptic. Here's my first question. The installer asks me "where is the linux source directory that matches your running kernel?" the default is "/lib/modules/2.4.27-2-386/build". I accepted that value. Is that right?

Then I go back to "dpkg -i hsfmodem_7.47.00.03full_i386.deb" and that installs seemingly well. (again I am asked about the linux source directory...) Then I execute "hsfconfig". All seems to go well. Alot of stuff goes by the screen. I am notified that to use my modem I refference it as "/dev/ttySHSF0". I think all is well.

I type "echo atdt3333333 > /dev/ttySHSF0" and nothing happens. I think I should hear dialing. There is no message. I try pon and poff just for the sake of trying them. No luck. I think either I made a mistake or there's really no way to get my modem to work. Any help... would be apreciated.

Wow! Alot can happen in 45 minutes. I restarted in Windows to write the reply above, and then rebooted linux. Then I edited the new "/dev/ttySHSF0" into my "/etc/ppp/peers/providor" file. (I don't know why.) I also added the speed of 14000 (which I think is right...) Anyway, I tried pon from my user account and I hear dialing! cool. I think the restart did it. Too bad the folks at the linuxant site didn't write that anywhere. pljvaldez, thanks. Thanks everyone.

Congratulations!

As I said above, the only bad thing is that the linuxant people have crippled the drivers to be 14kbps limited unless you pay for the key.
