Is it safe to upgrade?

Hi guys I recently installed ubuntu "warty warthog" and I guess I went to bed that night and the last command I issued was "apt-get upgrade" then I woke up in the middle of the night and shutdown my pc (in the middle of it upgradeing). I found that the next morning grub could not find the necessary kernel image to boot my machine. So I guess the question im really asking is , is it safe to upgrade ubuntu via apt-get?

Rule one: Don't turn off your pc in the middle of any operation, particularly an upgrade.

Rule two: If you can't boot your kernel, you have more problems than apt-get.

I use Debian, not Ubuntu, but apt-get should work. You might check any support they offer.

You might try re-booting your computer into a live cd (like Knoppix: http://www-106.ibm.com/developerwork...y/l-knopx.html), then chroot to your hard disk and see if you can fix things. If it is just the /boot/grub/menu.lst file that is messed up, you can then edit it. If you need to install a new kernel, you can do so manually once you chroot to the hard disk. Or if it is totally screwed up, you can re-install ubuntu.

Ubuntu should upgrade fine, but as the previous poster said, never shut down during the middle of upgrading.

Ok, thanks guys. Yeah big mistake powering down while upgradeing, I had to reinstall anyway. Good thing I had knoppix handy so I could save my data . And sigma I read your location from your profile, Portland, OR, huh? Thats pretty cool. If you havent already noticed mine says Salem, OR. Anyway thanks for the responses guys.
