is etch supposed to automount cdrom/cameras etc?

I have upgraded from stable to testing and all seems to have gone OK.

However, I find that if I connect a camera via usb or put an audio CD in the cdrom, nothing happens - i.e. I thought I might get an icon on the desktop acknowledging the mount(s), or some relevant software might open ...

Is this supposed to happen or do I need to add something to fstab or whatever.? (bit of a newbie just in case you hadn't figured it out yet).

Appreciate any help you can give.

Hi,
In Gnome, at least for me, icons appear on the desktop.

samael. Thanks for your info. I was afraid of that - I seem to remember before I removed unstable, I had icons showing up on the desktop. But I had so many problems with unstable I went back to stable and then testing - which is where I am now. I am also using Gnome. Which version are you using? Also - do you have anything special in your fstab? This is mine:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass> proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda3 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1 /dev/hda7 none swap sw 0 0 /dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 iso9660 ro,user,noauto 0 0 /dev/hdd /media/cdrom1 iso9660 ro,user,noauto 0 0 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0 usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults,devuid=0,devgid=107,devmode=0666 0 0

Cheers ..

You have to install the GNOME Volume Manager:
Code:
apt-get install gnome-volume-manager
This is available in all versions of Debian.

I tried the apt-get but it says I already have gnome-volume-manager installed.

Does it have to be used in some way?

Well, run following as the non-root user:
Code:
gnome-volume-properties

Thanks for your help . Got it sorted now. I had actually had a look at the properties (via the menus) but had missed that the cd player section pointed to the wrong command. Once I changed that to a cd player it worked fine. Now, when I put a cd in it starts to play automatically.

Appreciate the time you took out to help.

Regards

Richard
