Hi jepjeffery, Welcome to LQ. There are a couple of places to start reading.

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO.html

http://linmodems.org/

http://www.aboutdebian.com/modems.htm

That should be enough to get you going providing there is an available driver for your modem.

Good luck. ;-)

That looks like a Conexant part number so you might also look at http://www.linuxant.com

The driver download page has Windows drivers for Foxconn, Broadcom, and Conexant.

http://support.acer.com/us/en/produc...px?modelId=550

That very well could be a Conexant chip.

Good luck. ;-)

If it is conexant I recommend getting a different mode. Those buggers aren't much good when they work. You will get more speed and a better lasting connection with a hardware modem.

If that is what you have and they want paid for the half decent drivers (as opposed to the crappy free ones) hunt around the Dell site. They have the "good" drivers that you can download as a .deb, or did the last time I checked for someone.
