Internet connection bug?

The Virgin 'super hub' thing that supplies broadband internet is what I've got. (Isn't Richard Branson wonderful, with his hot air balloons and his moleskin trousers?) If it is switched off, as one does to save electricity, it must be switched on again. At which point all the lights come on correctly and the Gnome network manager icon shows that the internet is connected.

But the internet is not connected. It is necessary to tell the network manager to disconnect and then reconnect again. Then it works. All lights and indications are the same as when it did not work. Should this be surprising? Is it due to a recent update? Does it count as a bug? Thanks any help.

It's not a bug, it simply means that when the router is powered down your machine needs to obtain a new dhcp lease. The easiest solution to this is to configure a static IP address.

Equally if you have a single wired connection, you don't need network manager anyway. Just configure your machine via /etc/network/interfaces with a static IP: http://wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfiguration

Huge thanks. Tried:
Code:
auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet static
        address 192.168.0.7
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        gateway 192.168.0.254
in /etc/network/interfaces and it did not work.

Anyway, it does not matter, the present set up is perfectly usable.

It should work. You might want to enter your nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf as well.

This seems to be normal behaviour. I get around the problem by using
Code:
ifdown eth0
followed by
Code:
ifup eth0
