Intel 845GV ("Extreme" Graphics) problem...

The long and the short of things is:
I have a Hewlett-Packard a705w with this shitty Intel "Extreme Graphics" chipset...and really, it's about the only other graphics option I HAVE right now, except for this P.O.S. ATI Rage that's like 7 years old, and has about 4MB of RAM...and I think like a beta of OpenGL or something, lmao. So yeah, I can't find a suitable driver...or at least, one that I can make work. Grabbed an RPM from Intel, Aliened it into a .deb package, tried to install (dpkg -i), and it just kinda sat there. So, I'm thinking it's not the right driver...or...something.
(Did I mention I'm a noob on Linux? )
So, should I put the ATI RAGE in, or does anyone have an idea or something?
800x600 just doesn't cut it anymore.
And I really wanna play Pingus and Armagetron, lol.

In your xorg did you try the the driver "i810"
For dri you will need to recomplile the kernel for the
i915 driver. There is alot of info around. Google is your friend.
This is just some info for the future, before you;

I would do a little research ...
also post
cat /usr/src/linux/.config | grep INTEL

I've been doing nothing BUT research. It's irritating. I don't even know what the Hell Xorg is! But I did go ahead and throw that ATI card in here, resetup Debian, set the driver to ATI - and it gets more resolution options, more refresh rate options - but, unfortunately, none above 800X600.

Inside /etc you may not be using xorg.conf
If you are using a stable version or older version of debian
you may be using /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Look at the file for the section
Code:
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Card0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 1
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 4
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 8
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 15
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 16
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 24
        Modes "1024x768"
    EndSubSection
EndSection
What Modes do you have listed?
