Angry Installing software such as KINO or kde 3.5

I have used other Linux distros and been able to load a whole range of software but I am using Xandros at the present and it does not seem to allow adding new software that is not in it's own repository. Is this correct or am I missing something. I have tried using apt but with no result.

Thanks for your time.

You have to add the repositories to the /etc/apt/sources.list file first:

Code:
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org stable/updates main contrib non-free
Then do:

Code:
apt-get update
You should then be able to use apt. If not, you can always downoad the .deb packages and install them using dpkg.

Saman007uk, Thank you for you reply. Could you adivise me how to get the addresses in to apt. I am sorry to be so ignorant but I have only just started using this system and have very little knowledge. If you could explain step by step. I am most grateful.

Thank you for your time and patience.

Run the following in a shell:

Code:
sudo bash
cat "deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free" >> /etc/apt/sources.list
cat "deb http://security.debian.org stable/updates main contrib non-free" >> /etc/apt/sources.list
apt-get update
exit
Note: this will ask your for your user's password.

You can then install applications using:

Code:
sudo "apt-get install application"

spnoe you are missing something. Xandros3 update program already gives u debian sources just go into update/settings and uncomment the sarge sources. There are other X3 friendly sources--like andrews and zzup-- u can add thru same update/upgrade program. Their forum and free getting started manual give clear instruxns. Please do not willy-nilly start adding other sources. Follow the forum and starter guide.
