I'm not offended. Ubuntu  has its roots in Debian sid, however there are fundamental technical  difference between Debian Squeeze and Ubuntu 11.10 that will require to  be addressed or the installation will fail. Instructions for installing  XE under Ubuntu 10.04 will require less modifications and may apply to  Debian Squeeze.

This was posted by Dude the author of the two Howto's you linked to. If you can find that you may have a shot.

Have you seen this one?

kujirasan 01-22-2012 10:35 PM

I checked all of those, none works !
Dude recommends that the procedure will not work on SQUEEZE .
The one by the Japanese guy, is way out, there is much more configuration required.
I have installed it, but it does not work.

I had to look it up just to find out what this thread is about.

You may want to run some searches in Synaptic. I did that too. I am using Wheezy though so I don't know what is available for Squeeze.

Wheezy offers libs for accessing Oracle Dbs. From what I was seeing when looking the Db up on a search engine I got, perhaps wrongly, that it came in a couple different languages.

Running "Oracle XE" in synaptic gave me "libdb-je-java"
Quote:

Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition is a open source, embeddable,
transactional storage engine written entirely in Java. Like Oracle
Berkeley DB, Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition executes in the address
space of the application, without the overhead of client/server
communication. It stores data in the application's native format, so
no runtime data translation is required. It provides an easy-to-use,
programmatic interface, allowing developers to store and retrieve
information quickly, simply and reliably.
have no idea if that is what you are looking for.

Running "Oracle" in synaptic got this "libdbd-oracle-perl", that looked interesting. Again have no idea if it is what you are looking for
Quote:

DBD::Oracle is a Perl module that works with the DBI module to provide access
to Oracle databases.

The Oracle Instant Client needs to be installed in order to be able to use
this module. It is available free of cost from Oracle, but it is not free
software. To install the Instant Client, download the RPM package from
<http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/index.html>
and install it using Alien.
Might be worth looking into. May be a waste of time.

Hi widget, Thanks for tips, but they are not relevant, it seems Debian and the Oracle have had few clashes:

This is for Oracle 11:

not the XE, express edition, but apparently it works, I cannot understand it!

widget 01-23-2012 10:29 AM

Well I am sorry about that.

Many of us have a bit of a problem with Oracle and their attitude toward OSS issues.

Debian is pretty serious about this. This is why you don't get the nonfree firmware with the kernel for instance. Debian makes it available but doesn't include it by default because it really does offend some folks.

Can't claim that I am one of them but I do try to avoid too much exposure to Oracle products myself.

What you do is your business of coarse. You may want to look at alternatives.

Is there a specific reason you need 11g? I just installed 10g without any issues

The problem with software is that they change too fast, wonder any one using DOS, this is nature of things, not that I condone or like it!
I had Oracle 10g, thought I go up one notch when I reinstalled Squeeze, but it is very difficult as both Oracle and Debian crew are in a confrontational mode! And this does not help, mind you 10g is only a 32 bit!
This one works, but it is difficult to follow.

This one works as well(with little bit of luck)
