Question Installing on a Shuttle XPC SN27P2

Everytime I try to install Debian the system freezes. I tried installing using the "noacpi" flag but the freezing still happens.

What made me try the noacpi flag was I tossed in a Kubuntu live cd and it game me an error. After searching around I tried the noacpi flag on that and it started fine. I was hoping it would work with Debian especially since the installer recommended it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I got Debian (Woody, later Sarge and Etch) to work on a FN41V2 mobo (AMD Socket A, nForce2) back in 2004. It needed the nVidia nForce drivers. Check if your hardware is OK. Is your harddisk an SATA device? Debian still has some issues with those...

Hard disk is indeed a SATA drive. I've read on other forums that I should try "pci=nomsi" and to enable legacy mode for IDE in the BIOS.

I just found this over at Nvidia's website:

Quote:
NVIDIA nForce Drivers

Open source drivers for NVIDIA nForce hardware are included in the standard Linux kernel and leading Linux distributions. This page includes information on open source drivers, and driver disks for older Linux distributions including 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Linux.

Well...I tried Ctrl+Alt+F4 and it looks like it's hanging on this line:

Quote:
Sep 22 11:53:49 in-target: Get:4 http://security.debian.org etch/updates/main xserver-xorg-core 2:1.1.1-21etch1 [3654kB]
In the gui it always seems to hang on this line:
Quote:
Retrieving file 598 of 658 (3h40m28s remaining)
The time sometimes looks like it's going down very very slowly. Then it'll jump up to 3h46m40s and then jump back down.

The odd thing is when I was asked by the installer if I wanted to use a network mirror I selected 'No'.

Actually...it looks like it's downloading just very very slowly. I'll let it sit for the 3 hours to see if it ever finishes.

Unhappy

Well...I disabled my onboard NIC, put in a dual Intel server NIC and disconnected from the internet while reinstalling and it went nice and fast.

Even with the Intel NIC installed my network crawls. I'm getting dial-up speeds and slower.

I do have an older Shuttle XPS and Linux runs fine on it (Kubuntu 6.06). The one thing I did notice between my older XPS and my newer one is the old one had a generic kernel installed and the new one has a K7 kernel installed.

Any suggestions? This is starting to drive me nuts.

I can imagine that yes... Could you post a complete listing of the hardware, including proc, RAM, additional cards, etc. Check your RAM with Memtest86, available from the Debian repositories.

Well..I've tried installing 4.0r0, 4.0r1 and the daily testing image and I get the same results with all of them; extremely slow network speeds. This also happens if I use the onboard NIC, which is a Marvell chipset.

I also tried PCLinuxOS and worked flawlessly.
