Question Installing older gcc. Bad idea?

Hi All,

I have recently updated from woody to sarge which all went very smoothly. However some software I'm using has been identified as having an issue with gcc that comes with sarge and at the moment, the only fix suggested to me is to install an older gcc until a patch or update is released.

So my question is, is this likely to cause me any problems or should it be ok?

Also, if I were to go ahead and do it, I am unsure of the best way to go about it so any pointers here would be great!

I would have just got on and tried it myself but this will be done to a live system and whilst I can afford a short period of down time for the change, I cannot afford it to be down due to it all going badly wrong.

Your advice is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Surg

There is a package called gcc-2.95 that allows for clean installation of gcc 2.95 (the version found in 'woody') alongside the current version of gcc that is provided.
Just remember to specify the compiler to be used as gcc-2.95 when compiling your software, e.g.
Code:
CC=gcc-2.95 make
or whatever method that happens to be appropriate.
