I installed the new debian_lenny_5.0.1_amd64 x64, i am having a nVidia Geforce 8500 GT 512 RAM display card. I was trying to install the driver using the synaptic package manager. I installed them, but i was not able to use the driver. I don't know where the drivers are installed and how to use it.
I checked the xorg.conf , and the nVidia driver is not listed there.
Or you can download the installer from Nvidia and do the following:
Remove all nvidia packages installed via Synaptic. aptitude install module-assistant build-essential m-a update m-a prepare
You should now be ready to run the installer.
This must be done without X running.
Reboot into single user mode or do ctrl-alt-f1,login as root, then /etc/init.d/gdm stop(or kdm if appropriate)
Navigate to where you downloaded the Nvidia installer to and run with: sh Nvidiaxxxx
Let the installer compile the module and edit your xorg.conf, and you should be good to go.Once the installer is finished restart X or reboot.
I know Craigevil is an advocate of smxi so here's a link for that also:
I'm dealing with a troublesome X install. Actually X works, but the keyboard is messed up. I have a Spanish (es) keyboard, and it's printing as a US one.
outside of X, my keyboard is workign correctly. X overrules this however. I know I can use xmodmap to help me, but what I noticed is that my xorg.conf is empty, and xmodmap is really for single key mods, not for the entire keyboard.
I have also reconfigured xserver-xorg to no avail. Any advice?
LATER:
Ooops got it. The missing or empty xorg.conf is a common surprise I see, bit 'Xorg -configure' goes quite a way to sorting this out. However the layout option, XkbdLayout, was not there, but I schtuck it in, and now all is good again.
