Question installing 2.6.8 on 2.4.27-2 kernel panic due to SCSI hdd

Hi there
I am installing debian sarge on a machine that has 2 SCSI HDDs , these are on onboard raid connectors but I don't want to use the raid function , anyways....
I installed debian succesfuly , but I tried to upgrade the kernel , which is included in the CDs ( not downloading from web )

after installation I recieve kernel panic ,Attempted to kill init because it cannot find the proper devices :

in 2.4.27-2 kernel , everythings are on hdg1 , I know this kernel assumes that my HDD is an IDE , but in newer kernels , they like to run under an SCSI HDD , so they cannot read fom hdg1
I changed the /etc/fstab , and chaged every hdg to sdg , but still I have the same problem

Somebody please help me

Regards
Arsham

is there anyway to install the 2.6 kernel from the sarge CDs not the 2.4 by default?

That is what I am saying, if you take the net install cd
boot it
at the boot prompt type linux26
it will load a 2.6 kernel and install 2.6.(8?) instead of the default 2.4
