installed testing - dev mounts odd

I installed debian testing using the net install, setup raid1 and root on lvm etc, which was all done via the installer, I choose the 2.6 kernel during install, afterwards i installed udev.

when I view the mounts it shows dev being mounted on /.dev ...

# mount
/dev/mapper/vg01-root on / type reiserfs (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
/dev/md0 on /boot type ext2 (rw)
/dev/mapper/vg01-home on /home type reiserfs (rw)
/dev/mapper/vg01-opt on /opt type reiserfs (rw)
/dev/mapper/vg01-tmp on /tmp type reiserfs (rw)
/dev/mapper/vg01-usr on /usr type reiserfs (rw)
/dev/mapper/vg01-var on /var type reiserfs (rw)
usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
/dev on /.dev type unknown (rw,bind)
none on /dev type tmpfs (rw,size=5M,mode=0755)

is this normal ?

Additionally I get a number of errors on boot,

devfs_mk_dir: invalid argument.<4>devfs_mk_dev: could not append to parent for /disc

(about 150 times... ) everything seems to work ok - but something is wrong...

I appended devfs=nomount to the grub loader (lilo doesn't work with this setup for some reason) to see if this work - no change

any ideas ?

sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
/dev/mapper/vg-opt on /opt type reiserfs (rw,noatime,notail)
/dev/mapper/vg-tmp on /tmp type reiserfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,noatime,notail)
/dev/mapper/vg-usr on /usr type reiserfs (rw,noatime,notail)
/dev/mapper/vg-var on /var type reiserfs (rw,noatime,notail)
/dev/hda8 on /home type reiserfs (rw,noatime,notail)
/dev/hda9 on /mnt/data type vfat (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,quiet,umask=000)
/dev on /.dev type unknown (rw,bind)
none on /dev type tmpfs (rw,size=5M,mode=0755)
Quote:
devfs_mk_dir: invalid argument.<4>devfs_mk_dev: could not append to parent for /disc
what kernel are you using(debian package or custom)? whats the output of
Code:
grep DEVFS /usr/src/linux/.config
P.S. according to http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.p...highlight=udev /.dev is normal

grep DEVFS /usr/src/linux/.config

I don't have kernel source, however a grep from /boot/config...

# grep DEVFS /boot/config-2.6.8-1-386
CONFIG_DEVFS_FS=y
# CONFIG_DEVFS_MOUNT is not set
# CONFIG_DEVFS_DEBUG is not set

which looks like a problem - I'm using the standard debian kernel 2.6.8-1-386,

# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.8-1-386 (joshk@trollwife) (gcc version 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-2)) #1 Thu Nov 25 04:24:08 UTC 2004

I don't really want to recompile my kernel (me being lazy) It looks like its trying to use devfs even though i have the devfs=nomount in my append line

devfsd is not running - udev is

# ps -ef | grep -i devfs
root 6065 6050 0 13:10 pts/0 00:00:00 grep -i devfs
# ps -ef | grep -i udev
root 883 1 0 Jan01 ? 00:00:00 udevd
root 6067 6050 0 13:10 pts/0 00:00:00 grep -i udev

It looks like /.dev is being used, as if I try to move it...

mv /.dev /tmp
mv: cannot remove directory `.dev': Device or resource busy

I've listed by fstab file below

# cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
/dev/mapper/vg01-root / reiserfs defaults 0 1
/dev/md0 /boot ext2 defaults 0 2
/dev/mapper/vg01-home /home reiserfs defaults 0 2
/dev/mapper/vg01-opt /opt reiserfs defaults 0 2
/dev/mapper/vg01-tmp /tmp reiserfs defaults 0 2
/dev/mapper/vg01-usr /usr reiserfs defaults 0 2
/dev/mapper/vg01-var /var reiserfs defaults 0 2
/dev/mapper/vg01-swap none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hdd /media/cdrom0 iso9660 ro,user,noauto 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom1 iso9660 ro,user,noauto 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0

?
