installed debian etch xfce need help with a few qstns

thanks for reading.

just installed debian etch xfce using text expert install ...perhaps a bad choice...migrating from *buntu installs - too bloated and much slower in my opinion.

all seems well ,lighting fast, however...

1. added testing repositories:
deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
..and upgraded:
xserver to 1:7.2-5
xorg to 1:7.2-5
xfce to 4.4.2.1

Some of my icons and themes dont appear to work - e.g. Aurora: the widgets/controls are not drawn correctly, they just look "plain".

Also, "X -version" reports:

Code:
X Window System Version 1.3.0
Release Date: 19 April 2007
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 1.3
Build Operating System: Linux Debian (xorg-server 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12)
Current Operating System: Linux desktop 2.6.18-6-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Feb 10 17:50:19 UTC 2008 x86_64
Build Date: 09 August 2007
        Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.
Module Loader present
What is the relationship between 1.3.0 and 1:7.2-5 in synaptic?

My fonts in iceweasel are terrible although the rest of apps are antialiased fine (using a TFT display!)

Finally, where has the "Enable Composite" gone from the Window Tweaks?

uname -a
Code:
Linux desktop 2.6.18-6-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Feb 10 17:50:19 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Apart from that, its bloody dang good distro and I'm here to stay

How do I include Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf? I couldnt see how to attach them here and my attempt to include the 000s of lines was rejected :-(

Oh, and last but not least..

"HI"!!!

help with the above much appreciated.

Fonts - try these..

As for the logs and config.. you would just put them in code tags. is there a reason you are trying to post the entire Log ? just posting the relevant parts would be more useful. I would think xorg.conf would post without an issue.

for the Xorg log file I usually just look for warnings (WW) or errors (EE)

for instance..
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE

SOLVED!!!

Thanks for your links.

The problem was packages msttypefonts needed to be installed.

I guess LINUXquestions.org prefers to use Microsoft fonts !! Ha , how paradoxical.

Anyway, thanks buddy.

p.s. over your side of the pond are you shouting for Obama or Clinton ??

:-)

Quite frankly I'd like to vote for "None of the Above"

I'd love to see an election over here end with NEITHER the Democrats or Republicans gaining office. It would be nice to send them a message we're tired of their partisan politics B.S. and constant favors to big business at the expense of the people.

But I doubt that will happen in my lifetime.. Till then I'm trying to decide which of the candidates I hate the least..

Glad you got your Linux issues worked out.
