installation hangup

I am trying to install Debian 3r3 on a blank 40 gig hd. It is one of 3 hard drives in the system. I have a SATA 120 with win xp pro and a PATA 120 with windows files.

After booting from the install CD and pressing enter at the boot prompt, the process of checking the system begins. However, everything hangs once it gets to the following lines:

ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7, 03f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177, 0x376 on irq 15

there is no blinking cursor after these lines and the system check freezes.

Does this look familiar to anyone. Any ideas on how to fix it?
