install's non-install & no wifi

Just got debian 8 for trial and two immediate problems are no way to get wifi through settings of either web browser, and when tried to install openoffice [after deleting libreoffice] all went well until the install of the last set of files of "en-us" nature as upon being informed that did indeed install the "en-us" base file needed to install other "en-us" ones [en-us-base; en-us-calc; en-us-writer], nevertheless upon trying to install these am informed that first need to install the simple "en-us" one WHICH I DID SEVERAL TIMES. Tried rebooting, redoing, everything, but this "en-us" core one just won't register as being installed for purposes of installing all its follow-on related ones.
Have done this procedure on other OSes and never had a problem like this; is this some sort of known bug? If so, can't even get the fix due to no wifi.

With the wifi issue you most likely need to install the driver/firmware for your chipset and possibly the wireless tools. Look in the output of lspci to see what chipset you have.

https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware

As far as the problem your having with installing Open Office you should post the output of what is going on during the install so we can see what is going on in the terminal.

Curious. Why OpenOffice?

Ztcoracat 04-25-2016 01:43 PM

The new Libre Office runs great for me. I haven't used Open Office in a long time.
Is there something about Libre Office that you don't like?

Hi wiliamvw...

If you would, please open a terminal and post the results of the following commands...

Code:

lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2
If using a USB adapter, please us this command instead...

Code:

lsusb
Please also include the results from these...

Code:

iwconfig
Code:

lsmod
If this is a laptop...

Code:

rfkill list
Also, please unplug the ethernet cord if you're using one. Do you get any results from this command?

Code:

ping www.google.com
Thanks! :)

Itronix ix260+ my connection options for internet are solely wireless

Appreciated initial startup of libreoffice when OO was in doubt, but as have running project that started before libreoffice and is multi-decade with many complications [charts, columns, sketches, etc.] need the full continuity of OO for this work. LO is fine for new work, but will always need access to OO.

When try to install OO from command line, get that "file not found" despite full path given all possible ways and reading directly from the /home directory path listings.
For install try from subset of individual files, there is no problem installing 80% of them, but after "install" [supposedly completely according to message] the "en-US" set of files, and try to then install the follow-on other "en-US" ones [en-US-math; en-US-base; etc.] get message that first need to install THE ALREADY SUPPOSEDLY INSTALLED "en-US".
Seems to be some sort of blockage or non-recognition of connection between these staggered installs [yes, did already delete all of libreoffice which is required (why? thought whole idea behind linux was to give access to all options?) to allow install of any other full office suite]. And problem is not with the install medium as have used it successfully with other installs [openSUSE, Slack, Scientific].

Hi...

Please post the results from the lspci command below exactly as it's shown. I need the device ID number. ;)

Code:

lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2

Since Wheezy, LibreOffice replaced OpenOffice.

https://wiki.debian.org/OpenOffice

Apache Open Office if your interested is here:
https://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html

If a program that you downloaded is not showing in the terminal close that directory and close the terminal.
Open a fresh terminal, cd to the directory the program is in and than use 'ls' to list what's in that directory.

-::-For future installations of pkg's make sure your in the right directory before running ./configure.-::-

device numbers

Have inserted all device and other numbers; attempted install of Apache OO included both this downloaded option and the install dvd option -- installation was blocked on both types.

Hi...

To be frank, we need your help to help you. You didn't provide any details with the information you wrote above (such as error messages or logs) nor did you respond to my second request above. ;)

as to openoffice
WHAT!!!! exactly did you download
you have not informed us as to what
the debian *.deb package ????
or the redhat rpm package ??

and did you ever unzip the targz archive ?
and did you then cd into that new folder

the debian deb
"Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.2_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz"

unzip it and untar it
then use the package manager ( or terminal )to install the deb files
AS PER THE INSTRUCTIONS!
Code:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb
http://www.openoffice.org/download/c...tructions.html
the debian instructions
http://www.openoffice.org/download/c...html#linux-deb

if you downloaded the redhat rpm

you need the debian deb

or
did you grab the source code ?

update

Sorry, my oversight; should have mentioned that the added data was put into my earlier response to that question when I had left out many number figures.
Yes, what I opened and unpacked was the deb version of the app. Call on the installer did not complete install of full package and as said the parts stalled at "en-US'.
Message I get trying to get web service is that "server not found", despite having entered the ptrecise location [bluesocket2.einetwork.net and "CLP-Main Librarey".

Hi...

No problem, I didn't even think to look there. :)

It appears you might be missing the firmware for your adapter. To install it, please have a look here. Hopefully, that will get you up and running. If your system has an ethernet port and you can get access to an ethernet connection, you can install it that way or you might be able to install it offline via a .deb package. :)

Once your wireless connection is established, you should be able to install LibreOffice without a problem. Let us know how it goes...

Regards...

update

Successfully installed openoffice; thanks for the prompts -- I had not realized the listed directory sequence [/home/Desktop/etc] was not accurate: it needed /user insert after /home.
Still can't get wifi. Did the modprobe for ipw2200 and then downloaded the firmware-ipw2x00 but couldn't get it to install after copied it to desktop.
Got that 'has no installation candidate' and for many different install attempts [sudo apt-get update (went fine); followed by 'sudo apt-get install firmware-ipw2x00 and then many path provisions and name extensions (_0.43_all.deb) and other variations] only got that 'unable to locate package' or 'not found'.
