Inform apt-get about manual software install

I have installed Debian Sarge recently, and everything is working great. But when I wanted to install mplayer, I could not use apt-get, or make a .deb package out of the source so I just compiled it. But now I want to install the mplayer plugin for mozilla via apt-get. Apt-get states it needs mplayer > 0.94, which I have installed. How can I tell apt-get to ignore the missing dependency, or find mplayer? Thanks in advance for the help.
