Iceweasel ignores user set homepage and loads Mozilla

I'm using Iceweasel 2.0.0.2 on an AMD64 installation of Debian Sid. I'm using the 2.6.18-4-amd64 kernel (although i don't know if that's useful.)

I was messing around and deleted the contents of my tmp folder. Don't ask.

Anyway, now, every time I start Iceweasel, it opens to http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ instead of the homepage in my preferences which is www.google.com/linux.

The browser.startup.homepage is set to www.google.com/linux.
The browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone is set to rv:1.8.1.2.

I have no idea what homepage_override is.

Does anyone have an idea where I might be going wrong?

Same problem here after upgrade to Iceweasel 2.0.0.2+dfsg-1
Several folks have filed bug reports:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=412746

BigVig 02-27-2007 09:33 PM

Thanks for the pointer on the bug.

I'll keep track of it and try to post here when it gets resolved.

luis14 02-27-2007 10:22 PM

No problem.
I wonder if someone at Mozilla buried a redirect in the code. I wound up installing Firefox.

craigevil 02-27-2007 11:14 PM

For some strange reason it isn't affecting everyone. Hopefully it gets fixed soon as there have been several bugs filed concerning it.

Until then you can do:

apt-get remove --purge iceweasel
dpkg -i iceweasel_2.0.0.1+dfsg-4_i386.deb
echo iceweasel hold | dpkg --set-selections

Fortunately I was one of the lucky ones that this didn't affect, a lot of people on the sidux forum got hit by it though.

It's not really that big a deal. I just play a little game with myself; see if I can remember to click the "Home" icon before the Firefox page comes up. I suspect that luis14 may be correct in wondering if the Mozilla folks are playing games, as well. The bug report list suggests it's quite an unusual error. No danger that I'll install Firefox.

Which bug exactly?

What I see is a lot of duplicate bug reports.
People are really annoying, they don't even bother reading the BTS before filling a new bug.

It's not really a major bug, I will wait next Iceweasel version personnaly.

I am using Debian Etch and I don't have that kind of issues(I have no firefox installed). My homepage is google.ca and it is shown all the time I fire up IceWeasel.

In case anyone running Sid wants a fixed version, the sidux devs came up with one tht doesnt have this bug.

apt-cache policy iceweasel
iceweasel:
Installed: 2.0.0.2+dfsg-1
Candidate: 2.0.0.2+dfsg-1+c0.sidux.1
Version table:
2.0.0.2+dfsg-1+c0.sidux.1 0
990 http://sidux.com sid/fix.main Packages
*** 2.0.0.2+dfsg-1 0
990 http://ftp.us.debian.org unstable/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.2) Gecko/20070208 Firefox/2.0.0.2 (Debian-2.0.0.2+dfsg-1+c0.sidux.1)

temporary fix until the Debian devs get the silly bug fixed.

BigVig 03-02-2007 02:35 PM

The Iceweasel only opening to Mozilla has been fixed

From:

Debian Bug report logs - #412746
iceweasel always goes to www.mozilla.com on startup

<snip>

Source: iceweasel
Source-Version: 2.0.0.2+dfsg-2

We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of
iceweasel, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive:

It is ready to go.

Version table:
2.0.0.2+dfsg-2 0
990 http://ftp.us.debian.org unstable/main Packages

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.2) Gecko/20070208 Iceweasel/2.0.0.2 (Debian-2.0.0.2+dfsg-2)

Nice! .........

craigevil 03-02-2007 05:51 PM

Ok Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.2) Gecko/20070208 Iceweasel/2.0.0.2 (Debian-2.0.0.2+dfsg-2) seems buggier than the previous version.

For me it opens my Home directory rather than my homepage on starting, and when opening it from another app it opens 2 tabs in a new window rather than a tab in the existing window(which is how I have my tabs set).

Back to Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.2) Gecko/20070208 Iceweasel/2.0.0.2 (Debian-2.0.0.2+dfsg-1) for me , since I had no problems with it.

Iceweasel Bug

I have the same problem here, so I gave up on Iceweasel and am now using Konqueror. It works just fine, and although some web pages don't work well with it, it doesn't have problems with the home page nor does it open two tabs. I also like the fact that it can disguise itself.

Whats better, is that if I see a site that looks funny, I can always hit the back button and then right click on the link and say open with Iceweasel.

I also tried Opera, but can't handle the default interface, plus I am not thrilled about it not being open source.
