ibook G4 - Debian Lenny - Network Manager - ppc

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hello,
This is my first post and I appologize if I am posting in the wrong place. I did my first linux install today on my ibook. I installed Debian Lenny with Xfce4. The install went better than I expected, however I would have expected to have selected 'laptop' along with standard and desktop, but that wasn't one of my choices. So everything works great except there doesn't seem to be a GUI network setting so that I can setup a wireless network. I tried installing Network Manager from Aptitude but I am unsure how to get that to show on my desktop menu. Sorry this is most likely a really dumb question, but in messing with live cd's I was familiar with some sort of network manager. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Personally I think using a text editor to set up wireless on Debian is the easiest way.

The network configuration file is /etc/network/interfaces.

For wireless you need to install "wireless-tools" and "wpasupplicant"; if you have a console open: apt-get install wireless-tools wpasupplicant

There are numerous posts already on how to set it up and you can also find some tips in /usr/share/doc/wpasupplicant

wicd works very well, and has no gnome or KDE dependencies (since you mentioned you are running XFCE4). http://wicd.sourceforge.net/

install directions are on the download page.

Apparently Network manager, does not work with the new Atheros drivers and WPA, but wicd has no trouble. Per the How-to for my Netbook.
