i2c_probe crashes

I am close to getting a usbvision device driver to work with my Haupage usb live model 600. it is crashing inside the i2c_probe call (in i2c-core.c).

the message is
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000

I don't why this virtual address is picked. I have the device plugged into the usb socket, and the led is on. it would seem the i2c util is not able to find it?

any one with experience in such a thing?

it was bad code posted. there was an unallocated variabled used. I debugged with printk and fixed the problem!
