HPLIP - problem: looks like permissions

Debian/Lenny:
HPLIP installed fine from debian repositories; But when starting hp-toolbox, I get the error:
Code:
error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/usb/Photosmart_C4200_series?serial=MY71TCQ11504VP
warning: Device not found
When logged in as root, all is well; logged in as user, above error occurs

What am I missing?

Gary

Try adding your user account to the lp (LP) group. HPLIP requires the users to be a member of that group.

Thankyou for the reply!.

Unfortunately, my user id is already a member of group "lp"

Here is the /etc/group entry:

Somewhere I read that the udev rules were involved ---- when it comes to that I am totally clueless.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks again for the reply,

Gary

Hi, I am running the Debian Lenny and I have a similar problem as above. When I run "hp-toolbox"
I have the error:

"Unable to communicate with device (code=12): " Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/usb/Photosmart_C3100_series?serial=BR74CGC11Q04KV"

I get also the warning:
" warning: Device not found",

while in the dialog box of the "HP Device Manager" I get "Device communication error".

However I have the printer working. I mean, I can use it. Another thing is that if I kill the hp icon that
stays in the panel, the hp windows is not killed together and the error status (in the windows of the "HP
device Maneger") disappears.

I am putting here some outputs:

#####################################################

The last lines of demesg:

I thanks any help
