HP laserjet problem

Hi all,

I am trying to print 5.5" X 4.25" cards on my HP 5P laser printer.

It has worked sporadically in the past with this printer. Last timer I ended up hooking up an inkjet because I just plain didn't have the time to play anymore. It would magically work after rebooting sometimes. When it didn't work the printouts would come out portrait instead of landscaped. It would just work at times. Without changing any settings at all, the prints would come out landscape. Really puzzled me but as I said, I just used an Epson inkjet printer to finish the job.

Now I am trying the laserjet again. I am running sid

ii cupsys 1.3.6-1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - server
ii cupsys-bsd 1.2.7-4 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - BSD comman
ii cupsys-client 1.2.7-4 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - client pro
ii cupsys-common 1.3.6-1 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - common fil
ii cupsys-driver- 5.0.2-2 printer drivers for CUPS
ii foomatic-db 20061031-1 linuxprinting.org printer support - database
ii foomatic-db-en 3.0.2-20080211 OpenPrinting printer support - programs
ii foomatic-db-gu 5.0.1-4 OpenPrinting printer support - database for
ii foomatic-db-hp 20080211-1 OpenPrinting printer support - database for
ii foomatic-filte 3.0.2-20080211 OpenPrinting printer support - filters
ii foomatic-filte 20080211-1 OpenPrinting printer support - prebuilt PPD

It prints fine for letters.

When I try and print a landscape card it does print the right direction but the card would need to be twice as long to just print the 1/2. Instead of printing the first 5.5 inches it prints the second 5.5 inches. Now I am sure I could trick it by playing with the paper size and margins but it just seems like a pain the .....well you get the idea.

I am using openoffice.org
ii openoffice.org 1:2.3.1-3 OpenOffice.org office suite - word processor

I have all setting on landscape. Both the page format and the printer settings. Like I said it does print the message the right orientation just the wrong place on the page, totally missing my card.

I upgraded m everything I could before trying this because of the earlier problems I was having. On letters the laserjet does fine but now when I use the Epson I get mixed results.

If I send the Epson a 2-page document, openoffice.org or firefox, it will print the first page and 1/2 then stop while the little green light keeps flashing. If I try and print cards it prints one perfectly one at a time. When I try 2 in a row, without waiting for the first one to finish, the printer doesn't eject the first card and there is actually some print from the second card on the end of the first card. It's like it's getting printed with the first part of the next page.

I have googled this but came up empty. I have tried other drivers, ljet4, and other configurations in cups.

If you could give me any clues I would very much appreciate it.

thanks in advance,
Steve

Printers can be a nightmare on any system. All I can suggest is that you print the projects to PDF and see how it looks. If it is OK, then the problem is in the printer driver or hardware. If the PDF is not OK the the formatting of the program is the problem. You may also want to try printing the PDF.
