How will the new "amend to the Social Contract" affect Debian and its users?

Will it mean that all the proprietary drives be taken out?
Will it drive most newbies away?
The discussion on /. is just starting http://developers.slashdot.org/artic...9&threshold=-1

Won't have any effect except that you might need to break into a museum to find hardware that works with debian. There are enough sources for everything outside of the official distro anyway.I can't install debian on my box right now as it is and that will probably hit more people in the future.

I spent a big chunk of last night reading the original Usenet discussion and it bothers me quite a bit. I don't think it's wise to jump to conclusions in either direction at this time, but most (if not all) the posters in the thread I linked to are great developers and open source advocates. Teo T'so (who hosted the original Linux distribution site on his workstation for those who don't know him ) raises a point with fonts (virtually *no* fonts can be distributed), and there are a lot of other issues brought to light.

Personally I think they jumped the gun, but time will tell.
