How to make Huawei E226 USB Modem work in Debian

In case some poor soul is still jumping through hoops to get a Huawei E226 USB modem working in Debian (or Ubuntu, for that matter), here are some links that were very helpful to me:
on Linux:
http://wiki.debian.org/Huawei/E220
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Di...c9157ebe9c8ef6
http://installing-huawei-cdma-modem-....blogspot.com/
I hope the information proves useful!

Any tips on how to optimize download speeds for USB modems?

Incidentally, if there's anyone who has some tips on how to optimize download speeds for USB modems (currently I'm lucky if I get 35 kB/s), I would appreciate it very much. Cheers.
