yes ...it would be more polite to say ...why not read the manual...lol....

i started with RH5 and was not until last year that i switch to debian after almost 10 years with RH.....

with all the debian based Live CD out there ...there is a solution but remember ...onething about Linux is that you should know your hardware specifications.....

Nope. When you say RTFM, the user has to go to debian.org and 'try' to find the answer. Clinton De Young's article, is specifically directed to newbies, it is non-technical, and he writes as if the reader is a 5 yr-old which helps a lot when you know nothing about Debian, i know it sure helped me.

IIRC, i pointed out the sections where the answers were (Sections 9 and 10).

So...not only did i gave him the article BUT also the sections to read, and he still did not read it, instead, he came back bitching.

is that being mean on my part? I thought it was rude on his part not to appreciate my efforts and thank me for straightening him out, not even a thanks. Hmm...maybe you canucks are different.

Well I prefer a different approach if I had offered valid information/advice and he choose to ignore it I would have IGNORED him not ranted like a fool but that is just me I guess. You did go beyond the pointing out that the information needed was in the article and started denigrating people who were not even involved with the actual question let alone the OP and you expect someone to say thanks after that, well perhaps they do it a little differently where you live ...

PS: And yes it has been pointed out on many occasions that Canadians are way too nice for our own good, it is a national character flaw of being too polite even in the most trying of circumstances. Personally I think it is an over reaction to the American/European mentality/way of doing things. Anyway we are getting way off topic here and that is all I have to say on the matter.

If it's any help, you can leave the pci info blank. The biggie are the monitor rates, as it helps set your screen size.

I used the information from myrddin.org to both compile a duplicate kernel, and for installing the nvidia drivers. Only hiccup after that was my mouse refusing to work with *either* kernel. The light would never come on.

That's when I went to #debian on freenode. Scarynetworkguy had me run a couple checks. When I told hip it was a USB mouse with a ps/2 adapter, he told me to run it as just USB. Success!

I was scared to death of Debian last summer when I tried to install Woody. Nothin would work right, at least not compared to RH9 or Knoppix. An then Knoppix would become Sid after hd install, and my problems remained. No sound and no decent video.

Now it's much better.
