How to burn the cd using jigdo files??
 

Ok! I already downloaded the 103 pairs of Debian (.template and .jigdo) files.
How do I burn the cd now? Do I have to make the iso image first? Do I need the .md5sum file too?
I also downloaded the jigdo-lite but could not figure how to use it.

Once jigdo has completed the download it will create an .iso file. The easiest way to burn the cd is first do cdrecord -scanbus the result will give the details of your burner eg. mine is cdrecord dev=0,0,0 . The instruction to burn the cd would be cdrecord -v /path/to/iso. i.e. if the iso has been created in /home/julio then the path would be /home/julio/debian-30r1-i386-binary.iso

Unfortunately I don't have any linux installed yet.

I want to burn the cd just to start my first linux installation.

I'm still using Windows xp.

Actually yes.

I just went through this myself a couple of weeks ago. I'm looking for help on a couple of things myself. I didn't think that I'd be able to help someone else this early in the game. :)

When you launch the Jigdo program, I believe it asked you for the path to the file you'd like to download. This is where the .jigdo files you downloaded come into play. It took me a little while to figure this out, and then it hit me...

Enter the path to the 1st .jigdo file on your local hard drive. When I downloaded the files, I stored them on my D drive in a Debian2 folder. When it asked me for the path, for like the 15th time, I entered the following:

D:\debian2\woody-i386-1.jigdo

Just change the path so that it leads to file on your hard drive. You'll see a bunch of stuff happening in your Command Prompt window...it's just showing you what's it's downloading and from where. When it's done, it will automatically create an ISO image for you and place it in the same directory where you launched Jigdo Lite.

You'll probably need to do it for each .jigdo file you downloaded. You may be given the option of entering the path to all of your downloaded .jigdo files in the beginning, but I did it one at a time.

Then, in order to burn them, just load your CD burning software, select one of the ISO images, and burn away! Also, rather than wasting a bunch of blank CD-Rs, you should be able to complete the full installation with just the 1st CD.

There is an old saying here in my Country which I'll translate it to you: the obvius only the genius see.

I'll try what you recommend me right now. Also I'll see if there is one way to make all jigdo files in a batch instead of each one at a time (remember there are 103 pair of files). The chances I make a mistake increase a lot.

To a large extent this is a waste of time since monst of the files you need for the install reside on the first iso. Once you have the base system installed it is very simple to install the apps you want from the net using apt-get.
