How play CDs without a wire?

Can Debian Potato be configured to play Cds without wire from drive to soundcard?

If so how? Thanks any help.

You can play CD's, yes, and use them for data storage, but without the wire to the soundcard you won't be able to hear audio.

AFAIK, there isn't yet a radio (or otherwise wireless) setup from a CD-ROM to soundcard.

It's quit functional and has many backports if newer software is needed I guess. I know I'll stick to Sarge on the desktop for the next year

I'm also missing that CD-sound card wire; I wind up ripping music to play it.

I've got the wires in place, but I still can't get any sound from my CDs, in any distro. Tis most odd.

But having ripped my entired CD collection to Ogg, I don't care enough to do anything about it

EXCLAMATION POINT!!!

Debian Potato is VERY OLD!!!!

but anyways. you can do it. In xmms(i don't know if debian potato comes with a versionj of xmms new enough) right click and choose preferences. Then click on audio cd and configure. Then just choose digital audio extraction instead of analog.

Its been awhile since trying but if I remember you can do it as follows. A cut from my setup log.

Linux does have a program that can play a CD by reading the digital data over the IDE bus, it's cdda2wav, included with most Linux distributions.

cdda2wav -D /dev/cdrom -t 1 -eN

will play track 1, if the KDE sound system isn't keeping
/dev/dsp busy. The -eN options cause cdda2wav to echo the data to the soundcard and not write the ridded data to a file.

Tried it but Potato's version of xmms does not appear to have digital as an option. Thanks anyway.

Thanks Brian1 that sounds promising.

As perhaps a side note - it might be simpler to just rectify the problem rather than try to find a way to work around it? Most local (i.e. not chain) computer repair places will let you rummage through their extra cable bins for an audio wire if you ask nicely.

If that fails, they're pretty cheap.

You can use xine to play your CD's, with digital audio extraction over the ide bus.

Also, from KDE 3.3 onwards, KsCD also supports playing CD's using digital audio extraction.

Tried it got the error below, probably futile but might as well mention it

Thanks kevinatkins and rose_bud4201 - you're probably right, it's just that new they are a rip off in the shops.
