I would like to try debian but I'm confused about my choices.

I am currently downloading deb-31r0a-amd64-binary iso cd 1 and 2.

Will these 2 give me a working gui?I'm not even sure if debian offers a "pre-packaged" OS or if I have to build it myself?

I guess I need a clue.

If you are downloading the 2 DVDs I believe that is all you need.

I got the discs burned but the installer said I needed a partition on "/" to install.

I have several empty made so I mounted one on "/"using mandrivas part. utility.I actually have 9 on hdd.2 are mounted on /mnt and /home.Now one on / and 6 empty.

The installer had the same error and doesnt see any of the partitions on hdd.They are jfs/ext3.Is this the problem?

All you really need is the net installer, it is ~150mb, but it looks like you already pulled down the dvds. Selecting partitions in Mandriva's partitioning utility does nothing for the debian installer. It sounds like you may have set labels for the partition. When you get to the partitioning part of the installer, select one of the partitions and it should give you the option to select a mount point, or if you have no data on hdd, just let the installer partition the disc for you.

The debian installer does not see the partitions to select them.

I have 6 distros on hdd.I dont know why the installer wont see the partitions?

Maybe I'll try the net-install.I have a 6Mb/s connect.Downloading the iso only takes a few minutes.

it's easier to just point the installer at blank space on the drive and allow it to create the partitions it needs...

want to know how many distros i can install on hardrive i have 60gb HDD

and how to switch between different distros as u said u got 6 distros installed how will u switch between different distros

is it called dual boot or multi boot i gues dual boot is for 2 distros iam not sure or dual boot mean 2 different os one windows and one linux

Thats what I did.It worked thanks.

It all depends on what you want and how big the distro is.(most distros will fit in a 4GB part.)I have 9-8GB and 2-1.5GB swap partitions on hdd,5 now with a linux distro,4 empty and 2 swap parts.

hdc has 3-10GB parts with dos OS's,3-1GB parts(puppy,DSL,slax linux),a swap part and plenty of extra room for the next distro that catches my eye.

GRUB bootloader(or lilo)will load at start up and present you with a choice.You REALLY need to read some of saikee's tutorials on booting.He's the multi boot guru.
In fact I have most of his tutorials printed.They have saved my butt lots of times.
